There are two types of bear that are seen in the Shelter series, the Eurasian brown bear and the polar bear. The former is seen in Shelter 2 and Paws, whilst the latter appears only in Shelter 2.
The polar bear can be up to 1.3 metres tall at the shoulder, though females tend to be smaller, and can be as long as nine feet! They can weigh between 410 to 720kg. The polar bear is always white.
The Eurasian brown bear is smaller, with males typically weighing 300kg and females being smaller- the largest Eurasian brown bear recorded weighed 481kg and was 8.2 feet long, though most are smaller. They are usually brown, though the exact colour can range from yellowish to dark.
Bears in the Shelter universe are seen eating small birds, frogs, butterflies, berries, apples and may opportunistically hunt lynx kittens, though for the sake of realism, on this site they may also hunt deer, hares, fish and anything else a brown or polar bear may realistically eat. They may also scavenge.
Bears have no natural predators, though cubs may be attacked by wolves, lynxes and other predators if left undefended.
Brown bears hibernate in the winter, while polar bears are active year-round. Both species give birth to one to three cubs in winter, with cubs usually emerging during the early spring and staying by their mother's side for up to three years. The average lifespan of a bear is 20-25 years.
