There are two types of foxes seen within the Shelter universe- the red fox, and the arctic fox. The former is seen in Shelter, Shelter 2 and Paws, while the latter is only seen in Shelter 2.
The red fox stands at around 35-50cm at the shoulder, and weighs between 3-11 kilograms. Its length is 45-90cm, not including its tail. As the name suggests, it is usually red in colour, with black and white markings- however, some may just be red and black (known as 'cross'), or pure black with silver flecks (known as 'silver'). These three colours are the only colours allowed on this site, as all other colours come from fur farms and domesticated foxes only, and are not seen in wild populations.
The arctic fox stands at around 25-30cm at the shoulder, and weighs between 3-8 kilograms. Its length is 46-68cm, not including its tail. The colour of this fox depends on the season. In winter, it is pure white and blends in with the snow, though as the weather gets warmer and the snow melts, the fox's fur moults and changes colour to brown or grey to conceal itself better amongst the grass and rocks.
Foxes in the Shelter universe are only seen eating lynx kittens (as far as I know), however for the purpose of the roleplay (and realism!) they may also eat hares, lemmings, frogs, fish, berries, fruits and eggs, along with anything else a fox may realistically be able to hunt. It may also scavenge from leftover prey killed by bears, wolves or lynxes.
They are hunted by badgers, eagles and on occasion lynxes, especially if they target a lynx kitten with an angry mother nearby! Bears and wolves may also opportunistically kill a fox.
Foxes mate in the winter and give birth in spring to litters of up to 14 pups. The expected lifespan in the wild is up to six years, though some may live up to eight if they are lucky.
